Sony Confirms Xperia Z3+, Xperia Z4 Overheating Issues, Promises Software Fix

sony_xperia_z3_plus_waterproof_press_image.jpg
Another high-end smartphone featuring Qualcomm's Snapdragon 810 is in the news for overheating issues. Sony's recently launched Xperia Z3+ (launched as the Xperia Z4 in Japan) smartphone is reportedly facing overheating issues and the company has acknowledged the issue alongside announcing a possible fix coming this summer.
Sony Netherlands has told GSMInfo that it "recognises the problems." The Japanese company further promised a software fix for the Sony Xperia Z3+. For now, the company recommends users to turn off the smartphone multiple times during a day to avoid issues. Notably, some Sony Xperia Z4 users have also reported similar issueswith their handsets.
According to reports, the Xperia Z3+ gets very hot to touch when using camera for long periods or while playing graphics-heavy games. The handset also closes apps that cause overheating after showing a popup message to the user.

Sony is not the first handset maker that has faced issue with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 810 chipset, as LG previously claimed that it encountered heating issuesin the initial sample of the G Flex2 but was able to tackle it. LG clarified that it received updated chipset and also worked with Qualcomm to resolve the issue. A report in January had suggested that Samsung, on the other hand, ditched Snapdragon 810 chipset for its flagship smartphone. Recent reports also found the HTC One M9 to be facing issues with the Snapdragon 810 in terms of overheating, issues that were fixedby subsequent software updates.
The overheating issues in Snapdragon 810 processor was first reported in Decemberwhen it was claimed that the chipset heats up at certain voltage levels, resulting in under-performance. The company's Adreno 430 GPU was being said to be giving problems due to errors found in the drivers. The RAM controller of the application was also facing issues. Other reports indicated the problem had existed, but had been fixed.
To recall, Sony late last month launched the Xperia Z3+ alongside its dual SIM variant (Sony Xperia Z3+ Dual) and announced that both the smartphone would be launching globally in June. We can expect the company to delay the launch of the Xperia Z3+ in several markets considering now that Sony has acknowledged the overheating issues on the handset. An Italian website had claimed that Sony's Xperia Z3+ flagship might be priced at EUR 699 (approximately Rs. 48,750).

Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime Value Edition Leak Tips Complete Specifications

samsung_galaxy_grand_prime_value_edition_leak_winfuture.jpg
Samsung is reportedly working on a 'lite' variant of the mid-range Galaxy Grand Primelaunched last year. A German site has published the complete purported details of the Galaxy Grand Prime Value Edition smartphone alongside claiming European prices of the handset.
According to Winfuture.de (via GSMArena), the Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime Value Edition will be priced at EUR 199 (approximately Rs. 14,300) in European markets. Unfortunately, there is no word on India pricing and launch of the Galaxy Grand Prime Value Edition smartphone.
The Galaxy Grand Prime Value Edition (SM-G531F), much like the Galaxy Grand Prime, features a 5-inch qHD (540x960 pixels) display. The smartphone however features a different chipset - it is powered by 1.2GHz quad-core Marvell PXA1908 SoC coupled with 1GB of RAM.
One of the biggest upgrades in the Galaxy Grand Prime Value Edition is it runs Android 5.0 Lollipop. The Galaxy Grand Prime, on the other hand, ran Android 4.4 KitKat out-of-the-box. Similar to the Galaxy Grand Prime, the Galaxy Grand Prime Value Edition sports an 8-megapixel rear camera and a 5-megapixel front camera, while packing a 2600mAh battery.
Samsung, earlier this month, launched the Galaxy S6 Active smartphone and made it exclusively available on AT&T in the US. The Samsung Galaxy S6 Active, features very similar specifications to the original flagship, but in addition sports an IP68 rating that makes it water resistant (up to 1.5 metres for 30 minutes), dust proof, and shock resistant. It also meets the US Mil-STD-810G standard for withstanding vibration, temperature extremes, humidity, and high altitude.

BlackBerry Move to Embrace Android May Bring Unexpected Reward

blackberry_android_reuters.jpg
BlackBerry Ltd's move to embrace Android may be aimed at lifting revenue from its software and device management segment, but analysts say it may inadvertently give its device arm a fillip and a new lease on life.
"From the standpoint of marketing, this is a great way for BlackBerry to get visibility. It really doesn't hurt them much, and the upside is high," said Rob Enderle, who runs technology consulting firm Enderle Group.
Enderle and other financial and tech analysts agree that the move by BlackBerry does present its own set of challenges as the company would have to support two platforms and potentially put some resources into marketing an Android device, but with little to lose most agree it comes with little downside.
"If Android has one significant weakness it is security and that's just the thing that BlackBerry can fix, so it could play out pretty well and I am actually quite surprised that they did not try this sooner," said Enderle, adding that BlackBerry has to deliver a compelling device in order for the gambit to work.
Reuters reported on Thursday that BlackBerry was considering a move trial Android on its upcoming slider device, as part of a bid to convince potential corporate and government clients that its device management system, BES12, is truly able of manage and secure not just BlackBerry devices, but also devices powered by Google's Android, Apple's iOS and Microsoft's Windows operating system.
"In order for BES12 to succeed it has to be viewed by all as platform agnostic, and what better way to demonstrate that other than by doing it yourself," said Ramon Llamas, an analyst with technology research firm IDC.
BlackBerry, which once dominated the smartphone market, has seen its market share drop to under 1 percent, as the iPhone and a slew of Android devices fromSamsung have captured market share. John Chen, a turnaround expert brought in to fix its slide, is now pivoting BlackBerry to focus more on its well-regarded software and device management business.
Although the hardware business is becoming less relevant to BlackBerry as it works through its turnaround, the company still needs revenues from hardware as it ramps up new revenue streams.
"It certainly makes sense for BlackBerry's hardware business to experiment with Android," said Morningstar analyst Brian Colello. "BlackBerry doesn't have much to lose. There's little downside and they just need one hit phone to justify the handset business."

HTC Dismisses Suggestions of a Possible Acquisition by Asus

htc_gold_one_m9_twitter.jpg
Asus Chairman Jonney Shih last week said his firm has not ruled out an acquisition of ailing fellow Taiwan-based company, HTC. The statement may not have amounted to much but it led to enough reports that HTC has felt compelled to nip the talk right in the bud.

HTC in a post on its investor site refuted the rumours saying, "We strongly deny the news. We didn't contact Asustek and will not consider the acquisition. As an international brand, HTC will continue to design world-class innovative smart devices through its pursuit of brilliance brand promise."

The Taiwanese smartphone maker has been struggling to keep up with competitors in the past few years, and while it posted its fourth successive quarterly profit in Q1 2015, all that looks to be wiped out by the second quarter of this year.

Earlier this month, HTC revised its second quarter guidance in a downward direction, blaming the slow demand for high-end Android smartphones and disappointing sales in China. The company predicted a sales slide to TWD 33 billion-TWD 36 billion ($1.06 billion-$1.16 billion), a steep drop from the previous forecast range of TWD 46 billion- TWD 51 billion.

Back in April, HTC had estimated lower-than-expected revenue in the second quarter after a disappointing launch of its new One M9 and One M9+ models.

In March, HTC had shuffled its senior management, once again hoping to revitalise its fortunes. It replaced President & CEO Peter Chou with Chairwoman and Founder Cher Wang, putting Chou in charge of product development as the head of HTC's Future Development Lab.

Asus, on the other hand, has seen a resurgence in the smartphone segment with the popularity of its first-generation ZenFone series smartphones. The company this year launched ZenFone 2 with several SKUs to cater to different price segments.

Samsung Galaxy S6, S6 Edge Reportedly Receiving Android 5.1.1 Lollipop Update

samsung_galaxy_s6_rear.jpg?downsize=635:475&output-quality=80&output-format=jpg
Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6, the flagship handsets that were launched running Android 5.0 Lollipop, have reportedly started receiving the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update.
As per the latest report, the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update is being rolled out over the air (OTA) to T-Mobile users in the US, but is also available through the Samsung Kies software. Samsung has not officially announced the roll-out of Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update for the flagships. However, since the latest firmware's rollout has begun in the US, it is safe to expect the update to reach other regions including India soon.
Besides including several bug fixes for the devices, the latest Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update for Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge is said to introduce small yet useful features. The update, according to Sammobile, now comes with an easier to use exposure control system for the handset's camera alongside a wallpaper with parallax effect, which we first saw on iPhone devices. Several other user interface changes such as option to remove S Finder and quick connect buttons from the notifications section, have also been included in the latest OS version. The overall performance of the smartphones is said to have improved as well.
Android 5.1.1 Lollipop was earlier this month rolled out to Android One smartphones in India. Android 5.1.1 is also anticipated to bring a fix for the memory leak issue, a bug that plagued Android 5.0 Lollipop users and even haunted some users on Android 5.1 Lollipop.
Meanwhile Samsung on Monday introduced the Emerald Green colour variant of the Galaxy S6 Edge in India. The smartphone until now was only present in White Pearl, Black Sapphire and Gold Platinum colour variants. The new colour variant will be available in 32GB inbuilt storage version only.
